ORGANIZER’S STATEMENT: This four-day meeting (a follow-up to “Preserving the Anthropological Record,” held in 1992) brought together anthropologists, museologists, archivists, and representatives of funding agencies and anthropological societies to continue to define possible courses of action that might be taken to implement the goals defined at the previous symposium. The immediate need was seen to be the creation of a structure that would encourage various anthropological organizations, in association with the archival community, to work together to preserve and make accessible unpublished anthropological materials. The result was the founding of the Council for the Preservation of Anthropological Records (CoPAR), an organization whose objectives are to foster awareness of the importance of records preservation, provide information on records location and access, help provide support for existing repositories, provide consulting and technical services, and initiate special projects.
