Project Title

Khalid, Zainab (Syracuse U.) "Geographies of Care for Queer Muslims in the US"

My research seeks to explore an emerging landscape of spiritual and community care for marginalized queer Muslims within the United States. Following the 2016 Orlando Pulse shootings, there has been an increased claiming of political and religious identity by queer Muslims in response to the specific hostilities of simultaneous Islamophobia from larger queer circles and homophobia from within Muslim communities that shape their everyday lives. I aim to understand how queer Muslim institutions enact care through the cultivation of religiously informed modes of sociality and how geographies of care are imagined, created, negotiated and sustained in living precariously between Islam and queer sexualities within the US security state today, with increasing investments in anti-imperialist, intersectional solidarity work within queer Muslim advocacy aimed at abolishing the War on Terror.
