Project Title

Cully, Siobhan (Rutgers U.) "Workshop: Envisioning a more inclusive and innovative evolutionary behavioral sciences"

This workshop series brings together an international group of scholars to rethink how we study human behavior and culture through the lens of evolution. While Evolutionary Behavioral Sciences (EBS) have offered valuable insights into why humans think, feel, and act the way they do, parts of the field have struggled to keep pace with social change, global diversity, and critical conversations in the broader social sciences. Through a series of five themed workshops—focusing on language, theoretical models, disciplinary history, global expansion, and public engagement—we aim to make EBS more inclusive, relevant, and impactful. Participants will include both established experts and new voices, including those who have felt sidelined or skeptical of EBS. Together, we will reflect on how the field can move forward: refining outdated terms, rethinking core ideas, and identifying overlooked research areas. The series will launch in March 2026 at a hybrid event in Denver, Colorado, and continue virtually to ensure broad global participation. The project will result in an open-access edited volume designed to serve both academic and general audiences, and will support the re-launch of the Evolutionary Anthropology Society as a more public-facing, globally engaged organization. Sarah Alami, Rebecca Sear, and Agustín Fuentes are co-organizers.
