Katto, Philbert (Dar es Salaam, U. of) "Integrating paleoanthropological research and community engagement in Tanzania using applied visual Anthropology"This project aims at using applied visual anthropology methods to increase the visibility of paleoanthropological research on human evolution by actively engaging local communities of Tanzania. Despite the country’s immense historical significance in prehistory, public awareness is limited, and misconceptions about evolution are common. Our approach will help to enlighten the public about the importance of human origins. The project will use photovoice, debates, discussions, and heritage festivals to engage a broad audience, including primary, secondary, and graduate school students, policymakers, and local communities. The team will also create a heritage festival and partner with national broadcasters to ensure the sustainability of the project. Our project aims to revolutionize the field of paleoanthropology in Tanzania by utilizing the power of visual anthropology. This will enable Tanzanian paleoanthropologists to have a greater impact within the discipline and the globe. Moreover, it will develop means for the local community to actively engage and understand the contribution of Tanzania to the history of human origins in the world.
