We look at the role of northern Ghana’s Traditional Chiefs in customary land tenure decisions and pressures that they feel to commodify land in such a way that accelerates land degradation and deforestation. The research is qualitative and involves interviewing paramount chiefs and other tribal leaders of Savannah Region, in northern Ghana. We partner with World Institute of Africa Culture and Traditions, an indigenous NGO with whom we are engaged in a Research Practice Partnership to advance knowledge that can help improve food security in the region.
