Project Title

Quave, Kylie (George Washington U.) "Engagement, Intersectionality, and Indigenous Sovereignty: The Eighth Biennial Meeting of the Society for Amazonian and Andean Studies"

This conference brings together scholars and the public to ask how can intersectional and interdisciplinary, anthropologically-informed approaches to Amazonian and Andean studies contribute to addressing urgent, global challenges? We will host a 3-day hybrid (in-person and online) series of panels, posters, and multimedia presentations on four urgent themes related to the Amazon and the Andes: (1) decolonizing research and community engagement; (2) Indigenous responses to climate change and environmental justice; (3) intersectional gender studies in the Amazon and Andes; and (4) future directions for globally-engaged Amazonian and Andean studies. This event will take place on May 3-5, 2024 in Charlottesville, VA as the eighth biennial meeting of the Society for Amazonian & Andean Studies. Unlike the typical format of this event, in 2024 it will be structured around four urgent themes, and include in-person and hybrid participation to include researchers and practitioners in Latin America. There will be two outcomes: a website on the event will become an online repository of the video recorded presentations, and a proceedings monograph of the symposium will also be made accessible online or published.
