Project Title

Jean, Joseph (THE ROYAL NETHERLANDS INSTITUTE OF SOUTHEAST ASIAN AND CARIBBEAN STUDIES (KITLV)) "Local Perspectives on the Uses of Archaeological Heritage in the Caribbean "

This workshop aims to establish a long-term network of local Caribbean academics and non-academics to address the impact of global trends and debates on the uses of archaeological heritage and its future in the Caribbean in the context of global economic, social, political, and environmental contingencies. This four-day workshop seeks to enable local Caribbean academics and non-academics from various disciplines (archeology, anthropology, heritage and museum studies, history, etc.) to consider approaches and methodologies for the studies and practices of archaeology and heritage. In order to facilitate the necessary profound debates, the workshop will be structured as small and large group discussions, presentations, and keynote lectures. The key themes discussed in this meeting will be based on the examination of memory, identity, education, tourism, the process of patrimonialization, and first aid to cultural heritage in times of emergency (e.g. natural disasters). This workshop will aim for two main outcomes: first, to create a solid community between researchers and non-academics to improve communication and implementation of policies and projects in relation to the local and regional uses of heritage. Second, through the establishment of this network, to foster collaboration, training, and other relevant opportunities for the sustainability of Caribbean heritage.
