Project Title

Jean, Joseph Sony (Independent Researcher) "French Title: Jeter un pont entre le passé et le présent : Ouvrir le dialogue sur l'archéologie et le patrimoine haïtiens."

This three-day workshop will be the first international workshop on Haitian archaeology and heritage that will be held in the summer 2025 in Cap-Haitien. It will address together the Indigenous, colonial and post-colonial histories which are increasingly absent from various sectors, including public administration, academic scholarship and local communities. It will provide a unique opportunity to address this gap through an inclusive platform that brings together Haitian and international archaeologists, researchers, heritage professionals, and local community members. It aims to provide an international forum for collaboration and exchange of knowledge and expertise on Haiti’s rich heritage, which is under multiple anthropogenic and environmental threats. To facilitate fruitful discussions and generate concrete outcomes, this workshop will include thematic group and panel discussions, keynote lectures, and presentations. This workshop will address pressing discussions such as climate change, disasters and the future of archaeological heritage, archaeology and public policy, collections and conservation challenges. We expect several deliverables such as actionable recommendations to Haitian public institutions on the future of heritage, raising awareness and vocation in archaeological education and research, publishing of an open-access edited volume of the workshop discussion, and laying the groundwork for an Annual Meeting on Haitian archaeology and Heritage.
