Project TitleSabaté Muriel, Irene (Barcelona, U. of) "THE GENDER DIMENSION OF THE HOUSING CRISIS IN THE METROPOLITAN AREA OF BARCELONA (2008-2021)"
In the context of a long housing crisis (2008-2021) that has been aggravated by the COVID-19 pandemic, many Catalan households are being denied adequate homes. In line with the deepening of gender inequalities caused by economic hardship and austerity policies, the interplay of the housing system with household structures and the gender division of labor produce and reproduce forms of women’s oppression that are intrinsic to a system where housing has been commoditized and financialized. Ethnographic data will be collected among women inhabiting Barcelona’s metropolitan area to identify the impacts of the crisis on their living conditions, and how they cope with adversities in the housing arena. These adversities may include difficulties to afford a home and the inability to determine one’s living conditions. This happens despite the hegemonic conceptualization of the home as a space where mutual care is a self-evident practice, which is in contradiction with the disadvantaged position of women both within the household and in society at large, whenever they try to access adequate housing. This research project constitutes an attempt at shedding light into this intriguing contradiction, while paying attention as well to the experiences of women who have decided to struggle for housing justice.
