Project Title

Nava-Morales, Elena (U. Nacional Autonoma de Mexico) "Systematization of the historical process and sociocultural impact of the Mixe Jënpoj Community Radio"

The indigenous community communication is a major anthropological research issue and political goal of grassroots movements in different places across the globe. For this reason, our central objective in this research is to reveal the social and political processes of an emblematic radio station in Oaxaca, the J’npoj radio station. The J’npoj radio, located in Santa Mar’a Tlahuitoltepec Mixe, in the Sierra Norte of the state of Oaxaca (Mexico). The radio celebrated last year (2021) 20 years of existence in the community. It is one of the oldest indigenous community radio stations in the state of Oaxaca and its history of negotiations with agencies outside the community sets a precedent for the entire region and the state. For several years, the people responsible for the radio in the community, as well as the municipal indigenous authorities, have been highly interested, in analyzing and systematizing the radio’s 20-year experience. This is the driving force underneath the current proposal.
