Project TitleMunoz, Edgar (Universidad del Valle) "Unraveling Theatre for Young People: Performance and Agency in Cali’s Community Theaters, Colombia."
The Latin American movement of ‘community theater’ as a strategy of social intervention has a history of five decades of development, its main contributor is Augusto Boal who developed theater of the oppressed. In Cali, southwestern Colombia, many of these strategies are located in urban areas that grew due to forced migration. The inhabitants of these zones experienced a historical social segregation, ethno-racial exclusion and suffer from various forms of urban violence. Despite the growing anthropological literature on various forms of humanitarian and social interventions, the practices and effects on theatrical practice and agency development of young people living in contexts of violence and exclusion has not been sufficiently explored. This project aims to investigate ‘political performance’ in relation to agency (re)constructions among children and young people who participate in two ’community theater’ strategies in the city of Cali, Colombia. Methodologically, I shall conduct a multi-sited, performance ethnography alongside these young people and the implementing organizations to provide innovative analysis of two sets of social interventions that operate in Cali. This project also contributes to general anthropological knowledge through the strengthening of intersection among studies of performance, childhood and agency and everyday lives in zones of urban marginality.
