Project Title

Nicholson, Christopher (Arizona State U.) "tDAR-3D: An Open Science Workshop for Sustainable 3D Cultural Heritage Preservation"

The Center for Digital Antiquity at Arizona State University proposes to host an in-person workshop with 10-15 participants to explore the cyberinfrastructure and policy needs for preserving and sharing 3D data in anthropology. The event will support planning efforts for a potential 3D Digital Archaeological Record (tDAR-3D) repository; an open-access platform designed with ethical policies for the long-term preservation and visualization of 3D datasets, including artifacts, landscapes, and architectural reconstructions. Participants will include international cultural heritage professionals, policy experts, and representatives from Indigenous communities working together to identify core requirements for a sustainable and equitable platform. Discussions will focus on aligning the platform with both FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) and CARE (Collective Benefit, Authority to Control, Responsibility, Ethics) principles, ensuring ethical management and access. Topics will include metadata standards, data sovereignty, ethical stewardship, and long-term sustainability. The workshop will result in a set of actionable recommendations that will directly inform the software development and policies of tDAR-3D. This diverse group will have a major role in deciding how the platform can serve researchers, educators, heritage professionals, and Indigenous communities through cyberinfrastructure tools that focus on preservation, discovery, and responsible reuse of 3D digital resources across subdisciplines, regions, and cultures.
