Moges, Bethel (California, Los Angeles, U. of) "Black Anti-settler Placemaking: Examining Cooperation Jackson’s Eco-villages in Mississippi and Vermont"This project proposes one year of participatory action research with Cooperation Jackson (CJ) in Mississippi and Vermont. CJ is a Black-led eco-socialist collective. They have amassed over 30 plots of land in Mississippi, on which they have created worker-owned co-ops and affordable housing, and 175 acres in Vermont on which they will establish land stewardship agreements with local Abenaki tribes. CJ’s land-centered activism is on the cutting edge of decolonial social movement work. This project, designed in partnership with CJ, asks what new forms of community and governance they are able to build, how they work with or against state policies and structural racism, what processes of decision-making and reconciliation will guide them as they design their unprecedented land stewardship agreements, and how/if they will employ Black feminist care-based models of transformation to center women, queer and disabled-identifying folks.
