Project Title

Fairbairn, Andrew (Queensland, U. of) "The first farmers of central Anatolia at Canhasan"

Archaeobotanical analysis of Canhasan III, an Aceramic Neolithic settlement on , Turkiye’s Konya Plain will seek to understand when arable farming became the economic foundation of the settlement, how and when its distinctive crop suite appear and under what circumstances the arable economy was founded. Integrating plant macrofossil, microfossil and residue analysis in a contextual analysis of plant use secured by a radiocarbon based chronology, the project aims to provide new insights into the emergence of the first sedentary societies in Anatolia but also the foundation of the farming package that was taken from Anatolia to Europe. Training and career mentoring of Turkish archaeobotanists is a key outcome of the project which will leave a long lasting legacy and a foundation for future research progress in the region.
