Project Title

Chong Niembro, Andrea (El Colegio de Michoacan) "Living in the park, waiting in the shade. Temporary settlements of migrants and asylum seekers in Tapachula, Chiapas. 2019-2025."

In the research entitled “Living in the park, waiting in the shadows. Temporary settlements of migrants and asylum seekers in Tapachula, Chiapas. 2019-2025” I consider that in the city of Tapachula the paradoxes of regulatory mechanisms are expressed, which operate not only as forms of defense and humanitarian support aimed at people in the context of international mobility, but also function as strategies of containment and strategies that are redirecting the movement of people and are influencing the lapses that must remain in the places and on the routes taken. Government policies and practices have made it possible for people to stay for indefinite periods of time and to choose to live in shelters, look for rented places or that some inhabit public spaces establishing improvised and irregular camps. I focus on the temporary settlements formed in the years 2019 to 2025 to analyze through tours, interviews and photographic records the strategies by the federal government to redirect the mobilities, and through the analysis of the urban modifications implemented by the municipal government of Tapachula, to understand that these modifications hinder the establishment of temporary settlements and therefore the presence of migrants in the city.
