Project Title

Ferraz, Ana (Fluminense Federal University (UFF/Brazil), "Healing the Earth with the Guarani peoples"

Poetics of Guarani Care is a project that was born out of an ethnographic research on the question of territory in the Retomada Potrero Guassu, located on the border between Mato Grosso do Sul/Brazil and Paraguay. We are in a territory devastated by colonization, which during the 20th century deforested and divided the large and transnational Guarani territory that is organized around the Paran’ and Paraguay rivers. From the anthropological research between the fields of indigenous ethnology and visual anthropology, we propose a process of training in cinema in the community so that reflections can be produced about their conceptions and relationship with the land. We encourage the production of video by the Guarani themselves, based on valuing their knowledge to influence how their struggle for land is made visible. The Guarani knowledge about the care of the land, vegetation, rivers, animals and the health of people’s bodies are related and allow to configure a cosmology that is attentive to the relations of otherness. A poetics of care is configured by proposing an ethics of knowing oneself part of the world. The videos produced will be returned to indigenous schools, valuing their own knowledge in this institutional space.
