Project Title

Fattal, Dr. Alexander Leor, Pennsylvania State U., Philadelphia, PA - To aid filmmaking on 'Dreams from the Concrete Mountain' - Fejos Postdoctoral Fellowship

ALEXANDER LEOR FATTAL, Pennsylvania State University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, received a Fejos Ethnographic Film Fellowship to aid filmmaking on ‘Dreams from the Concrete Mountain.’ The Fejos Fellowship has enabled the grantee to reshoot, reframe, and re-edit a short film, ‘Limbo,’ which tells the story of Javier Alexander, a former FARC guerrilla fighter. The film is now an oneiric journey into the recesses of Alex’s mind, where he grapples with the legacy of what he has done and the pain he has caused. What becomes clear through the journey is that Alex is mired betwixt and between worlds, military and civilian, countryside and city, victim and perpetrator. The film is an experimental testament to a life lived in limbo. It should be viewed in the context of the director’s written ethnography: ‘Guerrilla Marketing: Counterinsurgency and Capitalism in Colombia’ (U. Chicago Press, 2018).
