Project Title

Birge, Adam (Texas, San Antonio, U. of) "Archaeological Survey of Pre-Hispanic Geoglyphs in the Sajama Region, Oruro Province, Bolivia"

This archaeological project investigates a set of linear geoglyphs called the Sajama lines around Bolivia’s tallest mountain, Nevado Sajama. Preliminary evidence suggests the lines were created prior to the Inka by small groups of pastoralists. However, it is unclear exactly when the lines were made, what practices are associated with them, and how the Inka and Spanish impacted them. This survey project is for the pedestrian survey, analysis of artifacts, and drone mapping of the region to provide the first large systematic survey of the Sajama lines. This will examine how landscapes may have been used by local people to resist imperial demands and have local traditions persist.
