Project Title

HUILIÑIR, VIVIANA (Colorado, Boulder, U. of) ""Green Borders: Protected Areas and Mapuche Mobilities in the Southern Andes in Wallmapu""

For several years, environmental conservation and indigenous peoples have sustained a complicated relationship that has fueled conflicts. In Chile, nation-state conservation efforts are part of a broad territorial project on Indigenous land that emphasizes how national parks participate reinforcing sovereignty in the borderlands. This doctoral dissertation project explores the implications of the conservation of border-protected areas in the Mapuche mobilities to examine the effects on Indigenous dispossession. This project uses mixed research methods to investigate the intersections between mobility, conservation, borderland, and sovereignty from a historical perspective, putting attention on the role of national parks in transforming the Mapuche territory in the southern Andes.
