This project will study the itineraries of transgender care between China and Thailand. As China upholds a paternalistic care regime, increasing numbers of Chinese trans individuals are turning to Thailand to access transition-related care. Using a critical (im)mobility lens, the study will trace how trans individuals navigate two distinct modalities of care in China and Thailand across the pre-travel, travel, and post-travel stages. Through fieldwork in Chinese and Thai clinics and community spaces, the project will explore how, along these care trajectories, trans individuals cultivate biosocial solidarity, generate knowledge about healing, and develop a community-based ethics of mutual care within the interstitial spaces between two care systems.
