Russo, Maria (CONICET) "Ancient DNA research in Northwest Argentina: knowledge, outreach, and social impacts on local communities and science museum visitors"Ancient DNA studies help us understand genetic diversity, human migrations, and population histories. But genetic data have implications that go beyond the scientific-academic sphere. Researchers and activists have pointed out many ethical, legal, and social consequences. Several studies suggest that genetic information matters in our thinking about identity. While some have used it to advocate for certain groups, others link it to racist ideologies rooted in determinism. This project aims to improve the understanding of public views on genetics. It also seeks to take part in local and global discussions about the risks and negative impacts. We will analyze how social actors use and reproduce ancient DNA data from archaeological human remains. We will study the knowledge of genetics among museum workers, local communities, and visitors in Northwest Argentina. Considering local needs, we will develop discussion workshops to foster dialogue on the scope and limits of genetic studies. We will collaboratively design educational materials that enhance the understanding of genetics. We seek to meet current needs in science, education, and tourism about the communication of genetic data while considering the consequences for society.
