Naegele, Kathrin (Max Planck Inst. for Evolutionary Anthropology) "Towards and equitable reconstruction of the Amazonian past - exploring the integration of Archaeology, Archaeogenetics and Oral traditions."The Amazonian region is in many aspects one of the most diverse regions of the world. Archaeological and anthropological research has contributed to understanding aspects of the history that has led to this stunning diversity, and in the process changing the culture of the disciplines interactions with the communities they work in and with. With ancient DNA, a new tool can be applied to study the Amazonian past. However, genetic research, especially when it connects to the past, can impact local identities and lead to political discussions with harmful consequences. It is therefore imperative to enter into a dialogue and understand the different perspectives of different communities and involved institutions before applying this method. In this four-day workshop, we want to bring together indigenous, non- indigenous scholars and representatives and leaders of the various communities in the region to discuss how we can ethically work with ancestors, what potential consequences for the different communities could arise from adding ancient DNA, how oral traditions, indigenous beliefs and knowledge systems can be integrated, and how the capacity to sustainably manage the data about the Amazonian past can be built, so that future generations keep control over their cultural heritage.
