This project seeks to increase diversity in the field of archaeology by working to overcome barriers that inhibit educational opportunities and entrance to the professional workforce. Students from HBCUs and Junior Colleges in South Carolina, where archaeology courses are not currently available, will have the chance to participate in archaeological field excavations, increasing their exposure to methods and theories that directly impact knowledge production in the creation of interpretive narratives that teach and explain South Carolina’s history. Students will participate in a week-long field excavation, working alongside archaeologists, historians, SC State Park Rangers, and educational interpreters as they collaborate in an active discovery and interpretation of South Carolina’s history.
