Project Title

Drath, Joanna (Pomeranian Medical U.) "Tracing Lives Lost: Isotope Analysis of WWII Victims from Treblinka and Stalag II D for Identification and Historical Reconstruction"

This project applies stable isotope analysis of dental enamel to investigate the geographic origins and dietary histories of individuals who perished in two Nazi-era camps: the forced labor camp at Treblinka and the prisoner-of-war camp Stalag II D. By analyzing oxygen (δ¹⁸O) and carbon (δ¹³C) isotope ratios from 100 individuals, this research seeks to reconstruct early-life environments and subsistence patterns, contributing to the identification of victims buried in mass graves. In contexts where DNA is unavailable or degraded, isotope data offers a minimally invasive, non-genetic method to aid forensic efforts. Conducted in collaboration with DPAA Laboratory, Hawaii, USA and the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin, Poland, this project integrates expertise in forensic anthropology and isotope geochemistry to establish a preliminary isotopic reference framework for World War II–era Central and Eastern Europe. This framework will enable future comparative analyses in forensic anthropology and conflict archaeology. Beyond its scientific contributions, the project advances anthropological understanding of forced migration, historical trauma, and biogeographic identity, while offering timely tools for post-conflict remembrance and rehumanization.
