Miranda, Fabio (Osaka U.) "The digitalization of marine surveillance in Peru's guano ecologies"This research examines the intersection of resource governance, scientific representation, and multispecies relations in the conservation of seabirds in Peru. Focusing on the material inscription and circulation of documents within a Marine Protected Area (MPA) in Peru, the study investigates how emerging digital technologies are reshaping current understandings of seabird ecology, particularly in the context of marine policy reform. Historically, guano birds have been central to the Peruvian economy, serving as a key source of agricultural fertilizers. Overexploitation in the 19th century led to scientific conservation measures, and despite shifting institutional priorities in the Cold War related to competing fisheries interests, guano governance continued to influence marine research. Recently, new environmental management frameworks have revived interest in these birds as bioindicators of ecosystem health. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork and archival research, this study explores the changing conservation practices of marine biologists and bureaucrats as they produce and circulate knowledge about guano ecologies. By tracking these changes, the research examines their implications for marine governance. The study ultimately contributes to broader debates in environmental governance by analyzing the role of digital technologies in reshaping multispecies relations and highlighting the evolving significance of guano birds in ecological and political debates.
