Project Title

Smith, Christen (Yale U.) "Establishing Dialogues: Anthropology and the Black Experience in Brazil and the United States"

This workshop brings together Black anthropologists from Brazil and North America to discuss the past, present and future of Black anthropology in the Americas. This bi-regional conversation–the first of its kind to our knowledge—will focus on articulating a vision for collaboration and dialogue for global Black anthropology in our hemisphere, centering voices from the South. What is the legacy of Black anthropology in the Americas and what are the methodological and theoretical interventions Black anthropology can make to the field of anthropology? How can transnational collaborations and dialogue between Black anthropologists from Brazil and North America help to shape the future of anthropology? Brazil is the largest country in Latin America in landmass and population. The recent establishment of the Brazilian Articulation of Black Anthropologists (Articulação Brasilieira de Antropologues Negres- ABAN) in Brazil–the first formal organization of Black Brazilian anthropologists, is therefore a watershed moment for Black anthropology. This workshop reflects on this historical juncture and the ways that North American Black anthropology can dialogue with and learn from Black Brazilian anthropology.
