Project Title

Namono, Catherine (Witwatersrand, U. of) "BONWA KA KGOPA, Makgabeng, South Africa"

The main aim of this project was to give back to the community through a community lead initiative from inception to completion. Methodologically, we used a community-based participatory approach that attempted to equitably involve all partners in the research process, cognisant of the unique strengths that each member brought to the project. We employed an indigenous approach Letšema (Tswana, Sotho, Northern Sotho) wherein persons volunteer to perform a particular task, without coercion and not expecting payment in return. Theoretically, the project sought to contribute to the growing body of archaeology and anthropology scholarship on Entanglement. Thus, we adopted an indigenous approach of heritage renewal and meaning-making focusing on how indigenous earth architectural structures are entangled with socio-cultural values, and are symbolic spaces as expressed through the various indigenous making processes in the Makgabeng.
